WILL TALON AND BADA PROCESS WITH THIS ASSIGNMENT?

The developments surrounding the unification process within our church continue to generate reactions, debates, fears, expectations and political interpretations among members across different countries, particularly in Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. The recent elevation of Air Force General Bertin Bada and his new appointment within the Beninese presidency have once again brought the discussion of the church unification agenda back into public attention.

Few days ago, the newly inaugurated President of Benin Republic, Romuald Wadagni through Decree No. 2026-324 dated Thursday, 28th May 2026 appointed Air Force General Bertin Bada as Advisor for Defense and Security to the President of the Republic. Within the governmental structure of Benin Republic, this office occupies a highly sensitive and influential position in the decision-making architecture of the Marina Palace.

However, beyond military prestige and governmental influence lies a more delicate concern among members of Celestial Church of Christ worldwide. The major issue attracting attention is not Bertin Bada’s military accomplishments, but his strategic role as Coordinator of the church unification initiative known as the Supreme Council Transition (SCT).

The SCT was established as a transitional structure involving representatives from Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Ivory Coast, with the stated objective of rebuilding institutional harmony and reuniting the church under a unified administrative framework after years of division, leadership disputes, and legal controversies that weakened the global image of the church.

Unfortunately, despite the noble objective attached to the assignment, the implementation process has continued to experience serious skepticism, internal disagreements and widespread rumors among members. One of the most controversial developments was the circulation of resignation letters by some Nigerian representatives within the SCT. While the committee reportedly rejected those resignations, the incident exposed underlying tensions and mistrust regarding the direction and legitimacy of the process.

Observers further alleged that former President Patrice Talon introduced certain clauses within the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), reportedly granting the President of Benin Republic the exclusive authority to appoint or remove members of the SCT. Though some of these reports remain unverified publicly, such allegations have intensified concerns among Nigerian members who fear possible governmental overreach into church administration.

Another controversial narrative emerging from discussions around the unification process is the alleged pressure from authorities in the Republic of Benin to encourage the Nigerian government and other foreign governments to recognize and facilitate the restoration of centralized administrative authority to Benin Republic, where the church originated spiritually through the ministry of the late Founder, Rev Prophet Samuel Bilehou Joseph Oshoffa.

This particular aspect has generated strong emotional reactions among many church members in Nigeria. Several members argue that while the Republic of Benin remains historically significant to the origin of the church, no sovereign nation possesses constitutional authority to impose religious administrative structures upon another country. For them, the independence of parishes and dioceses operating within Nigeria must remain protected under Nigerian laws and constitutional freedoms.

This tension has become more visible in subtle ways, especially regarding the handling of certain spiritual and institutional programs associated with the Republic of Benin. Some members witnessed that the annual Agougoue spiritual exercise, historically connected to Benin Republic traditions, has gradually faced resistance and cautious treatment within some Nigerian church circles, particularly in Imeko, Ogun State, which remains spiritually symbolic to the church globally.

With the completion of former President Talon’s administration and the retirement of Bertin Bada from active military command responsibilities, many observers are now asking an important question: will the momentum of the unification assignment continue with the same influence and authority?

For years, many members believed that the political influence of Talon’s administration and the military stature of Bertin Bada provided institutional weight behind the implementation of the SCT agreements. Their positions created a form of moral and political pressure that encouraged compliance from various stakeholders within the church hierarchy.

Now, with changes in political administration and shifting governmental priorities, uncertainty surrounds the future sustainability of the unification process. Some analysts believe the assignment may gradually weaken without the same level of governmental influence that initially backed the project. Others argue that genuine reconciliation within the church cannot be sustained through political influence alone, but must instead be built upon trust, transparency, mutual respect, spiritual sincerity, and collective agreement among members globally.

The skepticism from Nigerian members remains significant. Many continue to question the legal framework of the agreements, the transparency of decision-making processes, and the extent of governmental involvement in ecclesiastical matters. To these members, unity cannot be achieved through pressure, rumors, or political influence, but through open dialogue, constitutional clarity, and spiritual consensus.

Nevertheless, supporters of the SCT maintain that the vision behind the assignment remains noble and necessary. They argue that the Celestial Church of Christ has suffered decades of fragmentation, leadership disputes, and institutional instability which weakened its evangelical growth and global reputation. According to this school of thought, any sincere effort toward reconciliation deserves encouragement rather than suspicion.

At this critical stage, the future of the unification assignment may depend largely on whether the SCT can rebuild confidence among skeptical members, clarify controversial provisions within the agreements, and demonstrate that the process is intended for spiritual restoration rather than political domination.

One undeniable reality remains: Celestial Church of Christ occupies a unique spiritual and cultural position across Africa and the diaspora. Any attempt to unify such a vast and emotionally connected body must proceed with caution, sensitivity, legality, and deep spiritual wisdom.

Whether Bertin Bada and the legacy of Talon’s influence can successfully process and sustain this assignment beyond political transitions remains uncertain. However, the coming months may determine whether the unification agenda evolves into a lasting institutional breakthrough or becomes another complicated chapter in the long history of crises within Celestial Church of Christ.
