The year 2021 marked a turbulent chapter in the history of Celestial Church of Christ, as serious allegations of financial misconduct were levelled against the registered Board of Trustees (BOT). Despite the BOT’s notable contributions including the construction of the Basilica in Imeko, Ogun State, and bold efforts to restructure the Church’s financial systems for independence and transparency opposition arose from certain individuals whose motives appeared to run contrary to the collective interest of the Church.
Regrettably, the Pastor of the Church, rather than acting as a unifying shepherd, allowed his leadership to be swayed and ultimately divided by negative tactics. This division has weakened the Church’s spiritual and administrative foundation. The situation escalated when the Pastor moved to dissolve the registered BOT, an action that raised serious legal questions about his authority under Nigerian law.
In response, the matter was brought before the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State, which, in year 2021 issued a clear directive: both parties were to maintain the status quo pending the final determination of the case. However, despite the court’s order, the Pastor proceeded with unilateral appointments and continued to manage the affairs of the Church in a manner inconsistent with the legal directive, deepening the institutional crisis.
The consequences of these actions have been profoundly negative. The Church has suffered a significant setback in spiritual progress, modern infrastructural development, discipline, financial stability, and parish establishment. What should have been a season of consolidation and advancement has instead become a period of division and stagnation.
A Way Forward: The Call for Reconciliation
It is strongly recommended that the Pastor reconsiders his position and embraces a path of reconciliation and healing. A key opportunity for peace was presented in year 2021 through the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) brokered by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a respected elder and statesman. Accepting the terms of that MOU would not only show a commitment to unity and transparency but also reaffirm the Church’s dedication to its spiritual mission over personal or political interests.
For the sake of the Church’s future, history must not repeat itself. Leadership must be guided by love, humility, legality, and accountability. Only through such principles can the Celestial Church of Christ reclaim its vision, mission, and glory.
