It is widely acknowledged that free education was first introduced in Nigeria by Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in Western Nigeria in 1955. This ground-breaking initiative provided equal opportunities for individuals of all socioeconomic backgrounds. The implementation of the Universal Primary Education Scheme in the western region in 1955 led to a remarkable increase in pupil enrolment. The number of students in primary schools skyrocketed from 446,600 fee-paying students in 1954 to 811,432 non-fee-paying students in 1955, representing a staggering 90% increase in just one year. By 1961, primary school enrolment in the West had reached 1,134,788 pupils, marking a significant milestone in the education sector.
However, concerns have been raised about the 2024 budget allocation to Nigeria’s educational sector, which falls short of UNESCO’s recommendations. Despite receiving nearly N4 trillion in total budget allocations since 1999, the sector has struggled to function effectively, leaving many Nigerians disillusioned with the state of education in the country.
